Services
I work with my clients at every stage of their content development. Services are discussed prior to the start of each project and custom-tailored to meet your specific goals.
What does collaboration look like?
Once I receive your email, we discuss the project parameters and goals. This discussion could be entirely over email or a virtual meeting if preferred. For larger projects, I will provide a sample edit so that you can see how I work. I will explain my pricing and timelines.
When we are in alignment on your project goals, I will send a contract for you to review and sign that details the scope of work and expectations.
We will be in contact throughout the scope of the project. Once my work is completed, you will have the opportunity to ask questions about my edits or translation, and we will work together to finesse your final version.
Developmental Editing
Developmental editing is advised for content that centers around story and communication. This involves big-picture edits, including restructuring and re-organization of content and opportunities for content development. In addition to content edits throughout your work, this includes a written summary of strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for transforming and perfecting your work.
In developmental editing, we work closely together to articulate the heart of your message and discover the optimal way to express yourself to your intended audience.
Copyediting
Copyediting is a crucial component of content evaluation prior to publication. It includes reformulation of sentence structures for optimal clarity, as well as proofreading for proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Copyediting, also frequently called “line editing,” is my most commonly requested service. When copyediting, I correct for grammar, punctuation, spelling, word choice, and sentence structure. I reorganize phrases and sentences for clarity, consistency, and style. I also make modifications based on register: certain terms and expressions, while grammatically correct, do not fit your intended tone or audience, and I will help you to select a more appropriate word or expression.
I will tighten up your prose to reduce redundant expressions and terms. Finally, I will leave comments in the margins whenever I have questions about the meaning of a phrase or sentence, when I have concerns about factual correctness or the persuasiveness of an argument, or when I want to offer a more substantive suggestion to clarify your writing.
Note: Copyediting does not include substantial revisions to your arguments or fully rewritten sections of your text. In copyediting, my job is to improve and perfect your own style, not to impose my thoughts and ideas onto your writing!
Proofreading is a final step in the process of writing for publication. For an individual author, proofreading usually means one final check for typos and spelling mistakes, without any substantial stylistic modifications. In publishing terms, proofreading is the process of comparing typeset or digital proofs with a previous version to find typos or formatting errors before final publication. I have experience in both forms of proofreading.
For all copyediting and proofreading projects, I will make at least two complete passes of your text to double-check for errors and inconsistencies.
Style Guide & Formatting
Often publications require specific formatting and style considerations. If your work is completed and ready for publication, I will help ensure that it is properly formatted per your publication’s specifications.
Providing a correctly formatted text is one of the best ways to show editors that you are diligent and serious about your publication submission. Every publisher tends to follow a particular style guide for punctuation and formatting of quotations, notes, and bibliographical references.
Modifying your text based on style guide requirements can be daunting and time consuming! I am happy to help with your style guide formatting needs.
I have particular expertise in MLA, Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS), APA, and De Gruyter style guides, among others. I will format your article or manuscript based on the style guide requirements of a particular journal or publisher. I will also assist with formatting of tables, figures, and illustrations.
I will track down incomplete citation and bibliographic information and verify citations for an additional fee.
Translation
Great translation involves so much more than simply running text through and AI or translation software. Human translators consider tone, register, cultural nuances, localization, and the “feel” of a text, resulting in a more cohesive, holistic, and beautiful translation.
I specialize in translations from Italian to English, and I have over fifteen years of experience in academic and professional translation work, as well as sci-fi, fiction, and screenplays. Additionally, I have completed translations from medieval Italian vernacular to English, French to English, and Latin to English.
While I often translate texts within my specialty field of Italian literature, I have also translated numerous works within the fields of philosophy, economics, sociology, marketing, historical and epistolary documents, to name a few. When working on a new project, I research field-specific terminology and create glossaries in order to create a more accurate and consistent translation. I will also locate previously published translations of major works quoted within the text, or I can provide an original translation, if preferred.
I have ample experience in U.S. and U.K. localization. When localizing a text, I adjust spelling, idiomatic expressions, punctuation, currency, weights and measures to follow the standards of American or British English. Localization is particularly helpful when submitting an English language text to a publisher located in the U.S. or the U.K./Europe, where local language standards are expected or required.
